Keeping Caregivers Safe at Home (class for caregivers and the general public)
The second in the series of free classes, sponsored by the StewARTworks Foundation, focused on providing caregivers with information about home safety, body mechanics and keeping themselves healthy while caring for their loved ones and families. The discussion and demonstrations were led by an occupational therapist.
Katie Beltrami, MSOTR/L, discussed the importance of energy conservation as a way for caregivers to avoid fatigue and the specific strategies to accomplish that goal: set priorities, plan your time, pace yourself, use good posture and be efficient and organized. She also provided guidance on dressing, bathing, and grooming their loved ones and offered strategies on how the caregivers can protect their own physical health – avoiding strained and aching backs – when transferring loved ones from bed to chair or getting them in and out of cars.
